Labor to reduce flooding in Elwood and revamp Elsternwick Park North

A Shorten Labor Government will contribute $3 million towards the Elsternwick Park North redevelopment to help with flood mitigation and the establishment of new green spaces for the local community.

Shadow Minister Clare O’Neil and Labor’s Candidate for Macnamara, Josh Burns, visited Elsternwick Park North today to make the announcement.

Federal Labor will partner with local community groups, City of Bayside, City of Port Philip and Melbourne Water to redevelop the former Elsternwick Golf Course into an environmentally focused urban wetland reserve with integrated flood mitigation and water catchments.

It will also rehabilitate the Park into a quality home for indigenous plants and animals, and create a unique open space for local residents to enjoy.

The development will expand Elsternwick Park North’s wetlands and deliver a large water catchment to deal with Elwood’s flooding risks during heavy storms – catching water before it flows downstream.

The suburb of Elwood, where over 15,000 residents live in the seat of Macnamara, is one of Melbourne’s most at-risk areas from flash flooding, including major floods resulting from storms in 2011 and 2016.

On historical swampland, the local water catchments are simply not built to sustain these weather events.

This redevelopment of Elsternwick Park North will significantly reduce the risk of flooding to residents in Elwood, while delivering other significant environmental and recreational benefits for residents.

Labor candidate for Macnamara said this was an example of Labor listening to the community and acting.

“Labor is serious about protecting the environment and making sure it’s there for future generations to enjoy – action on climate change, investing in the environment, and maintaining Australia’s status as the great outdoors, and this investment in Elsternwick Park North will help us get there,” Mr Burns said.

Labor is committed to exceptional public amenities; this investment is an invaluable opportunity to support the local community.

Labor will always prioritise bigger and better parklands and stronger communities over the top end of town.
